Chapter 134 - Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock @ Oasis Damansara

Marking the beginning of New Year, I thought of having a "muhibbah" post to kickstart this great year hence, that is the reason why I have been quite silent for the past two weeks, trying to get inspiration on what to write. I tried to figure out what would be the best post to get the ball rolling especially this will be the first post in the year of 2018.

Lately, boyfie recommended me to this place called Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock at Oasis Damansara; a very nice food place that fits my first blog post for the new year. On a very rare afternoon, I took the chance to step out of the office and visit this place. I was really excited the minute I stepped into this shop surrounded by so many working professionals eating there and soft background music featuring three different languages of songs. The songs were supposed to be loud but I guess the voice of the crowd overcame it, somehow.

Last weekend, I brought my parents and my brother to this place again. I really like how friendly the staff is and the ambience of this shop, bringing me back to the days where I used to run a lot and play with pokok malu-malu (mimosa pudica) at my kampung while my grandfather boiled a pot of siham (cockles) for us.

Nasi Lemak Ayam (RM 11.70)
One of the most recommended food in Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock is non other than Nasi Lemak Ayam. It is so delicious that my dad couldn't agree further - the chicken is well marinated and juicy despite that it has been deep fried. Sambal is amazing, fitting the taste buds of people of all ages.

Ayam Goreng (RM 7.50)
One chicken is never enough so we order another one more to satisfy our palette.

Mee Goreng Muthu (RM 9.60)
After doing a thorough research, some did recommend to try Mee Goreng Muthu. As excited as I was, I quickly had a spoon of it the minute it was put on our table. It is very fragrant in aroma but somehow, the taste is just so-so. I wish that the chef could put slightly more spices and increase its spiciness.

Nasi Goreng Ali (RM 9.60)
This is very special! The taste itself has won the heart of many; it is not like the usual fried rice that we always have at elsewhere but something is really special with this dish; not sure if they do have their own special sauces to fire up this rice. Worth trying!

Nasi Goreng Kampung (RM 9.60)
Trying to stay as authentic and pure as possible, I opted for Nasi Goreng Kampung too. For once and for all, this plate of fried rice does make me crave for more - staying true to the name of this dish, it comes with kangkung, sliced chicken and plenty of anchovies. Even, this dish is filled with "wok hei" so I strongly recommend you to try it if you like kampung fried rice.

Cantonese Noodles (RM 9.60)
Enough of rice so we opted for a plate of Cantonese noodles. Just like the Chinese "Ying Yong" or "Wan Tan Hor", this dish never fails us. All of us like it except for my brother - he thinks that it is a bit too artificial as the dish is surprisingly sweet. My take on that is the vegetables are sweet, leading to the sweet gravy but my brother thinks otherwise.

Hainanese Chicken Rice (RM 9.60)
Among all the dishes, this was the least favorite one. The rice and chicken are very cold. Chicken does not taste well and the portion is quite small - not worth the money at all! The chicken rice at the hawker stall tastes way better than this. What is unique about this chicken rice is the soup where it carries the similar taste and smell as the prawn noodles soup.

I will come back again to try out other dishes like their Penang Assam Laksa and probably opt for their Nasi Lemak Ayam again :).

Chapter 103 - Food hunting at Malacca for 2 days and 1 night (W Restaurant, Jonker Street, Tiong Sheng Restaurant, Nadeje, Teo Chew Bat Kut Teh and etc)

**This is a long post and it is full of food photos**

I was quite overwhelmed when I see a number of "likes" in my earlier post, posted in Facebook when I wrote a weekend retreat to Port Dickson. Though the "likes" are not many, I still want to thank those who really take your time to read my post and be part of my life. Thankful for that! =)
On another note, I had quite a fair busy consecutive weekends. At the time of writing this post, I was actually fasting in conjunction with 30 hour famine event.

Last weekend was another tiring weekend, I would say nevertheless, it was a fun gathering with a group of friends who traveled all the way to Malacca for food hunting. Initially, the plan was to get our friend to cook since he is the chef at Hilton KL Hotel but unfortunately, due to the lack of kitchen utensils provided in the hotel, we had to put that idea aside.

After treating our tummy with breakfast at Restaurant Taman Rashna, Klang, two cars headed to Malacca. Our first stop was nonetheless for chicken rice! Since one of the preferred chicken rice had closed by the time we reached, we went ahead with the ones next door.

1. Chicken Rice at Restaurant W Chicken
Fit tummy for 5 people, we ordered a whole roast chicken. Not sure if we were hungry but the chicken taste good actually. In comparison with the ones in Ipoh, I still prefer Ipoh's chicken rice because the meat is juicier and smoother as compared to the chicken rice sold in Malacca. Bill came up to RM 55.00 for 5 pax (including drinks).

After that, we checked in hotel. Took a rest. Watched tv. Took photos. And got ready for dinner.

2. Cheese Mihun and Stir-Fried Ginger Chicken Cube at Restaurant Tong Sheng
Known for the famous cheese mihun, we wanted to try it badly and decided to queue up. Waited for half an hour but the queue did not seem to move and our tummy were starting to kick us. We gave another 15 minutes and yet, the line did not move. Therefore, we went to the restaurant that is just opposite our hotel in which they sell good BBQ food. Since I couldn't afford to walk away without trying the cheese mihun, I decided to give a call and make the order. Woah-la! Lady luck was at my side and the lady boss allowed me to take-away, provided it is at 1030pm.

Story cut short, we took away a packet of cheese mihun and a side dish of stir-fried ginger cube chicken. While the rest were strolling the Jonker Street, the four of us went ahead and ate them. Muah...delicious! The cheese mihun is absolutely worth trying but it is slightly a pain to the pocket. We ordered medium size and the portion is rather small. When comes to stir-fried ginger cube chicken, it goes well with the cheese mihun. In fact, it goes well with even a can of beer. Mild taste yet succulent piece of chicken.

Taman Melaka Raya, Melaka.

3. Chinese dishes at Restaurant (opposite The Straits Hotel, beside Restaurant KNK)
Speaking about dinner, we went to this place that sells good porridge apparently. We ordered 3 big bowls of porridge accompanied with some side dishes like Mongolian chicken, yam ring, fried squid and greenies. Yummy!

4. BBQ food (opposite The Straits Hotel, beside Restaurant KNK)
Our main highlight for the dinner is actually the BBQ food. Without knowing that it is quite pricey to order this, the ladies went ahead and picked about 2 plates full with food. When it was brought to our table, we were amazed and quickly ate them. Coming towards the end, we saw the price written on each plate where the total was at RM 96.00. Freaking expensive actually for BBQ food only nevertheless, it is not hurt right to have them once a while, right?

5. Durians!!!
After dinner, we went across the road and immediately, our tummies called for more despite that we were quite full. Durian..can anyone say no to this? We ordered 2 durians to be shared among 9 people since 1 of our friends dislike it. And it is never enough unfortunately... If you know how to select a good durian, please do choose your own rather than having the owner or seller to choose it for you because there is a high possibility that the durian they choose will not be good.

6. Satay Celup
Yup, you see it right! Can you imagine the amount of food we put into our mouth? Right after our Chinese proper dining meal, we had durians followed by Cheese Mihun and Stir-Fried Ginger Cube Chicken and Satay Celup to call the day off.

I was literally giving up and I only chowed down 5 sticks. When comes to Satay Celup restaurant, I feel that most of the restaurant provides the same taste as they use the same ingredients, perhaps? I don't find it special among one another actually except for the price per stick where some sell it at RM 0.70 per stick while some sell it at RM 1.00 per stick.

.................................................................................Night........................................................................

When the sun rose, our food hunting began again. This time, we started off with the typical Klang food.

7. Bat Kut Teh at Teo Chew Bat Kut Teh Restaurant (walking distance from The Straits Hotel)
Apparently, this place sells one of the best bat kut teh in Malacca. Some said that their Bat Kut Teh taste way better in Klang henceforth, as the Klangrians, we need to try to make the right justification. We ordered a bowl of the soupy Bat Kut Teh and another bowl is the dry version or I should say it is a "Hong Ba".

What is unique in this place is they serve yam rice as compared to Klang. When comes to Yoo Char Kueh, there is no doubt that their Yoo Char Kueh tastes way better than the ones we have in Klang. Also, they are compact in terms of size unlike the Klang Yoo Char Kueh. However, the bat kut teh serves in this restaurant seems to be a bit disappointing. The taste is very mild unlike Klang's bat kut teh which is rich in flavor and taste. Added by my friends, perhaps, that's the way on how Teo Chew people have their bat kut teh where they prefer mild in taste.

Jalan Melaka Raya 4,
Malacca.

8. Durian cendol at Shan Shu Gong, Jonker Street
I don't fancy the durian cendol in Jonker Street but my friends were crediting on how good they are. Just like my prediction, they use durian dodol instead of real durian flesh to make the durian cendol hence, this causes the cendol to be very sweet. I still prefer the ones in Port Dickson :)

9. Chicken Rice at Jonker Street (beside Shan Shu Gong, Malacca)
Despite we had bat kut teh in the morning, like an hour earlier, we went ahead to have their chicken rice. Queued up. And I came to belief that this restaurant sells nice chicken rice. The business was exceptionally good on that day. Got our seats and proceed to make order. The chicken rice is good but still, Ipoh's chicken rice wins!

10. Layer cakes at Nadeje, Plaza Mahkota
Few of my friends were insisted to go to Nadeje and I was quite lost there since there are Nadejes' in PJ area. Nevertheless, I just followed with the majority. We ordered 6 cakes to be shared among 10 people and here you go, we were there to celebrate one of our friends' belated birthday.

75000 Melaka

Opening hour: 11.00am - 10.00pm (Mon - Sun)

11. Klebang Coconut Shake
By the time we had chicken rice and Nadeje layer cakes, I raised my white flag, surrender! We looked at our watch and the time dictated that it was about 3.30pm. So, we drove all the way to Klebang to buy coconut shake. The queue was crazy so, we ended up heading back empty-handed in which we were quite thankful for because our tummies were really push to the limit.

All the way, we drove back to Klang and had our dinner together at Restaurant Park Village, Taman Rashna before calling it off a day. A nice gathering to have everyone together despite the abundance of food we put in our tummies.

This trip has certainly given us another means to better understand one another and it also actually bond our friendship, I believe. Like what I mentioned earlier, nice memories are meant to be cherished and cheers to our 10 years of friendship since high school.

Chapter 78 - Spend 24 Hours in Ipoh, Perak, just by eating...

A real short-getaway to Ipoh, Perak at the eleventh hour! No plan was made ahead to go down to Ipoh and I was truly grateful that I went ahead with bestie's crazy idea to Ipoh while paying a visit to my sister in the neighbouring states.

There was nothing much you can do in Ipoh, knowing that you were restricted with a very strict time. As clock was working real hard, we knew that we couldn't waste much time, touring and pondering where to head to. Hence, we made good use of our time there and sampled tons of good food in Ipoh.

In morning, we headed to Sin Yoon Loong Restaurant and had their signature toasted bread plus cups of coffee. We tried the normal coffee and white coffee; both have its distinctive taste and I urge you to try it especially if you are a coffee lover. Following to that, we ordered a plate of "chee cheong fun" since many people were queuing for it. Woahla, glad that we tried it. Unlike chee cheong fun that is sold elsewhere, the chee cheong fun here is soft in texture. Accompanied with dried shallots and jalapeno plus a slight sweet-ish sauce, our breakfast ended tastefully.

Restaurant Sin Yoon Loong
15A, Bandar Timah, 30000 Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia

Next up, we had some tarts and "kuih" for brunch. Called us big-eaters, we had "wu kok" or known as yam plus meat pastry and egg tarts. This stall is located in front of Restaurant Sin Yoon Loong, so you can hop by to try some of these though they are quite pricey. All these "kuih" are freshly made so thumbs up! However, their service were quite bad as the lady boss and her staff were very rude in treating their customers; I went there to purchase these a few times and I gained the same treatment - RUDE! Probably, that's because they assume they sell the delicious food or simply because, this is how they converse to their customers ...:(.

Since dim sum is quite famous and popular in Ipoh, I bugged my bestie to try some dim sum though we were pretty full. We went to two restaurants and both restaurants were quite packed. One of it was at Foh Shan Restaurant, Ipoh and another was located somewhere nearby there. (forget the name..)

Overall, the taste is just so-so only. Nothing great to shout about except that the price for dim sum is again expensive compared to the rest.

Upon hitting 1.00pm sharp, bestie and I headed to Tauge Ayam Lou Wong Restaurant to have the chicken rice. I knew from my friends that there are other places which sell better chicken rice but unfortunately, we have no idea where to locate it. To be on the safe side, we went to this place since it is so prominent with many red umbrellas on the road.

Personally, I love their pork meatballs more than anything else. The chicken is quite "hard" this time, so I don't fancy it much. The hor fun is rather tasteless to me so, I prefer to dine it with their rice. Service is fast and we swallowed the meal within minutes. Called us hungry pangs this time!

Restaurant Tauge Ayam Lou Wong, Ipoh
49, Jalan You Tet Shin, 30300 Ipoh, Perak

After lunch, it was snacks time! Renowned as one of the best stalls that sells good taufufah due to the soft texture that melts in your mouth instantly, the stall is always packed with people, be it passersby or those who drive through.
Funny Mountain Soya Bean
49, Jalan Theatre, 30300 Ipoh, Perak

Before we made our journey back to KL, we had dinner in Restaurant Triple Two, Ipoh. Selling dry curry noodles, porridge and steam chicken, we came to this restaurant, purely due to friend's recommendation. No regret because the dry curry noodles is really, really good. As for the chicken, it is just so-so only.
Restaurant Triple Two
222, Jalan Pasir Puteh, Pasir Puteh, 31650 Ipoh, Perak

All in all, a 24 hours trip to Ipoh was a fruitful one despite that it was a very short getaway. We came home with bags of biscuits from Restaurant Sin Eng Heong and look down....hehehe...
Taaa Daaa.....

Chapter 56 – Uncle Ang Chicken Rice Shop, Klang

Good chicken rice is all about the way the chicken is cooked, the texture of the chicken and most importantly, the rice. I am not a huge fan of chicken rice but sometimes, I must admit that chicken rice could be the best choice especially when you have an hour for lunch only – it is pretty much a balanced food where it has carbohydrates, proteins and fibres.

My parents used to pack chicken rice from different places in Klang but this place itself deserves some credit. Though the shop is located a distance from my residence area, the shop could sustain its business by just selling chicken rice. Started opening its stall in the morning at about 8am, the boss never manages to steal some time to rest. People constantly flock in to the shop and dine in there while some willing to queue up to pack the rice back home.
In one of the Sundays, I brought my bestie there for breakfast. We were greeted with a long queue yet, it did not stop us from changing our mind to change our breakfast venue. We ordered bits of everything so that we could taste the best out of it. Bestie ordered roast pork and roast chicken while I ordered steamed chicken and “char siew” – unfortunately, the boss got my order wrong and gave me a plate of steamed chicken and roast pork.
I must say that the pork in Klang tastes really different from other places and probably, that’s the reason why Klang is so famous with its bat kut teh. Juicy and succulent roast pork instantly opens our appetite in that morning despite the early hour. It is crunchy at the outside but it is moist in the inside, carrying the intense flavour of the roast pork.
Roast chicken on the other hand, is just so-so only. As for steamed chicken, the texture is really soft even though I opted for chicken breast. The steamed chicken is cooked at a well manner whereby the “juice” in the chicken is burst for every bite you put in the mouth.

Once we are done with our breakfast, bestie packed a packet of roast pork rice. Two hours later, he ate it and he complimented that the rice tastes much better when it is being packed rather than dining it on the spot. I guess it is because the gravy is all soaked into the rice already and thus, the rice tastes way delicious.

All in all, with our drinks on that day plus the addition pack of rice, the bill came up to RM 20.10. If you are at that area, you may want to try your luck and dine in there – I believe many have recognized the good chicken rice otherwise, the shop will not sustain by selling only one food and its competitor is just few doors away.

Uncle Ang Chicken Rice is located at: Jalan Dato Yusof Shabuddin 44, Klang, Selangor.

Chapter 43 - Chicken Rice @ Hiong Kee restaurant, Klang

Hainanese Chicken Rice is commonly associated with Hainanese, Malaysian and even, Singaporean cuisines. Truth to be told, a lot of people assume that it is easy to cook Hainanese Chicken Rice however, I feel that there is a lot of hidden agenda behind in order to produce a fragrant bowl of rice plus the tender yet smooth chicken.
Recently, my bestie and I visited Restaurant Hiong Kee at Bukit Tinggi, Klang. I was pretty happy when I first stepped in because the place was clean and it brought the cosy ambience to the diners there. With a stall stationing outside of the shop, it manages to bring a large crowd of diners to opt for their chicken rice.

Upon our arrival there, we were greeted by the friendly staff and they recommended their good food, knowing that it was our first time there. My bestie opted for pork belly and roast chicken while I got myself a mixture of Char-Siew and steamed chicken.

Honestly, I don’t find their steamed chicken fascinating as well as the roast chicken. As for the Char-Siew, I had better ones before in Shah Alam. However, I must give credit to their pork belly. Understood that there are 3 layers of meat which are lean meat and the fats, I must say that the chef has done a pretty good job here. The fats are cooked in crisp and I enjoyed eating them. Even, bestie couldn’t agree further and he ordered another plate of pork belly.
In total, our bill came up to RM 23.00.

The Hiong Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice is situated at: 61-0, Lorong Batu Nilam 5, Bandar Bukit Tinggi, 41200 Klang.
