Chapter 18 - 24 hours in Penang!

Known as "Pearl of the Orient", Penang is the name, commonly known to everyone. Despite that, Penang is a food paradise where you can find a good plate of char kuew teow, a bowl of delicious cendol, a refreshing cup of coconut shake, a scrumptious plate of Oh Chien and many more. Everytime I have the chance to visit Penang, I will definitely go for food hunt!

Having said that, a day in Penang is just like an outing to Midvalley - Imagine you have plenty of food to dine within 24 hours and all you know is you will be coming back, adding 2-3kgs to your body weight.

Upon putting my feet in Penang island, my food hunt began.

Breakfast
Like a typical Malaysian, bestie and I started off by having our breakfast at Toh Soon Cafe - we had steamed bread with kaya and peanut while accompanied with a good cup of coffee drink. Though the place is a bit small, the food itself has managed to attract the locals and tourists alike to visit the area.
Venue: Toh Soon Cafe @ Campbell Street
Price: RM 5.00 for 2 plates of steamed bread and a glass of ice coffee

Lunch

You can't afford to miss a plate of Char Kuew Teow when you go to Penang as it is a food icon there - when you talk about Penang, first thing people would ask is "How's the Char Kuew Teow there?" In Georgetown itself, there are so many stalls selling this iconic food and how can I miss it?

For lunch, bestie and I had Ice Kacang and a plate of Char Kuew Teow at Lorong Selamat. When you are at that street, you will realize that there will be 2 stalls selling Char Kuew Teow - one is known as "Hong Mao Ah Yi (Red Hat Aunty)" and another one is known as "Sunglasses Uncle". Both cook a relevant nice Char Kuew Teow that comes with 2-3 big prawns in each plate.

Venue: Char Kuew Teow @ Lorong Selamat
Price: RM 8.00 for a plate of Char Kuew Teow and RM 4.50 for Ice Kacang

Tea Time
Under such a hot weather, it is always best to have a bowl of cendol. A bowl of cooling and refreshing cendol is motivating enough to urge us in continuing our food hunt!Few steps down the street, you will come across Lebuh Tamil and you can find a special drink called "Air Tingkap". It is a mixture of Ais Campur, Ais Sarbat and Ais Kelapa Campur - very nice and a cup of it is just not enough.
Venue: Cendol @ Lebuh Keng Kwee and Air Tingkap @ Lebuh Tamil
Price: RM 2.10 for Cendol and RM 1.50 for Air Tingkap

Dinner
For our dinner, we had Char Kuew Teow and this time, we went to Siam Road - we were kinda lucky as we managed to get the last plate and it was 8.30pm only at that time. The chef himself was very generous with his ingredients and we had a fair bit of everything, from chinese sausages to scrumptious prawns.

Aside from Char Kuew Teow, Oh Chien is also a must-to-eat food when you go to Penang.
Venue: Char Kuew Teow @ Siam Road and Oh Chien @ Penang Road
Price: RM 4.00 for Char Kuew Teow and RM 8.00 for Oh Chien

Supper
When your legs hinted you that it's time to rest, it is always best to pack some food and you can enjoy it while you are on the way home. "Pi Pa Duck" was our chosen food for supper. Hailed all way from Air Itam, Pi Pa Duck was definitely worth trying. The crunchy skin and flavourful meat never fails to make us continue eating and I trust it would be a perfect meal if the supper was accompanied by a glass of beer!
Venue: Pi Pa Duck @ Air Itam
Price: RM 20
